Meet Ian Michael.
Name: Ian Michael
Undergraduate Degree: Florida State University, B.S. in Marketing, 2011
Hometown: Lake Worth, FL
Job: Human Resources
Working at FSU since: 2013
What was your first job?
My first job was stocking, sorting, and cataloging classical CD’s at the FSU College of Music. Johann Sebastian Bach is playing in my head now.
How did you get your start in Campus Recreation?
As a student, I was a participant of all things Campus Rec almost every semester I was in school. So when a position opened up that I was qualified for, I jumped at the opportunity.
What do you do for fun?
If we’re being honest, most of my fun includes binge watching television shows (Game of Thrones is the best show in television history, change my mind). Most of my money goes to supporting and attending FSU athletics events. I also love spending time with my wife, Christina, and my pupper, Belle. Sometime’s I run for fun.
Who do you admire and why?
I admire my wife. She is the most driven, intelligent, and compassionate person I know. I aspire to be like her every day of my life.
What’s your favorite place to grab a meal in Tallahassee?
Breakfast: The Egg Cafe & Eatery
Lunch: Burrito Boarder (best tacos around and a fun environment).
Dinner: Well’s Brothers (for that burger craving).
What do you do?
I oversee payroll of all student staff of Campus Recreation and reimbursements for student travel. I also assist our HR Rep. in the onboarding process of new staff, both student and professional.
What does an average day look like?
Most days begin with checking emails, voicemails, and my calendar. Payroll and travel reimbursements will have my attention a majority of the day, but I tend to hop around and help out as needed to spice the day up a bit.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
You might see a theme to our department’s responses to this question, but it’s being able to work with our student staff. They are so engaged and bought in to what we do. They make coming to work every day an absolute pleasure.
What advice would you give yourself in college?
Adulting is hard, so enjoy your time now. Explore Tallahassee, because four years will fly by and there is so much to experience here. And cheer louder at sporting events, if it’s possible!
