What was your first job?
My first job was working as a lifeguard at the Alma Aquatic Park! I was 16 when I got that job and spent my days saving lives Baywatch style… Jk, I ate a lot of nachos from the concession stand, tanned, and said “go” from the top of the water slides.
How did you get your start in Campus Recreation?
I got my start in campus recreation as a lifeguard my freshman year of undergrad. I worked my way up through the ranks of campus recreation at the University of Arkansas and even ended up changing my major to recreation because I liked playing so much!
What do you do for fun?
I think I get the most excitement out of playing outside! Since I was little, I have enjoyed traveling, hiking, biking, swimming, and razor scootering. Over the last half-decade, I have learned a lot about backpacking, skiing, and paddling, and enjoy those outdoor sports a lot too! I also like chilling, watching Netflix, crying over the Arkansas Razorbacks losing, and gaming on a weeknight…
Who do you admire and why?
I admire Sally Thode, my advisor from grad school. She helped me through my Master’s degree, challenged me to develop my own land ethic and inspires me to be a champion for the outdoors. Also, she now spends the majority of her year traveling internationally. She’s pretty awesome.
What’s your favorite place to grab a meal in Tallahassee?
Sweet Pea!!! I’m not even vegan but their buffalo tofu sandwich is hands down the best buffalo sandwich you will ever have. It has just the right amount of kick. To be honest everything there is good so go check it out!
What do you do?
I am one of our Outdoor Recreation coordinators, I oversee Outdoor Pursuits and Camp Flastacowo! So I set up our Outdoor Pursuits trips and staff them, and then in the summertime, I switch gears and oversee Camp Flastacowo which is an outdoor day camp that runs for 8 weeks every summer at the Rez!
What does an average day look like?
An average day kind of varies. I feel like I’m usually in my office at some point in the day answering emails, setting up programs, working on gear during the Fall and Spring semesters. Usually, during summer you’ll find me running around in a sweat-soaked shirt checking up on campers, paddling, or playing ultimate frisbee.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
I love the people I work with! Both my students and the admin staff are a blast to work with. We are professionals in “play” so coordinating, running, and participating in fun programs each week makes the job great!
What advice would you give yourself in college?
I would tell myself to go to class, but enjoy the time with the people around you! Try new things, go play on the weekends, and remember that a healthy body can lead to a healthy mind!
