About Camp Flastacowo
Camp Flastacowo is located on Lake Bradford in Tallahassee, Florida. We create a space and program for youth aged 8-14 to gain experience and respect for the outdoors and others. Camp Flastacowo seeks to create a space where youth of different ages, abilities and beliefs can come together in the outdoors.
These ideals are built through experiences, including: kayaking, sailing, canoeing, challenge courses, arts and crafts, and outdoor education. Through these experiences, youth build self-confidence, awareness and acceptance of others, and spark a life-long participation and enjoyment of the outdoors.
Wondering about our name: Camp “Flastacowo”? Flastacowo is a portmanteau (a blend of words in which parts of multiple words are combined into a new word) which combines four words: Florida State College for Women. Camp Flastacowo was the original name for the lakefront park facility, founded in 1920 when FSU was the Florida State College for Women to be a home for recreational activities for the student population. Just 7 acres along Lake Bradford when it opened over 100 years ago, the park has expanded to 73 acres today with its lakefront area and surrounding forest land and remains a vibrant home for outdoor recreation for the FSU and Tallahassee community.
