- IM Sports Officials are trained through our Officials Clinics to officiate one of the many intramural sports that we offer. You learn how to make the calls to keep people safe while also having fun! Being an official doesn’t require previous experience, but you do have to attend the scheduled Officials Clinics to work.
- Facility Attendants work in all of our facilities (Leach Center, FMC, our many sports facilities, and the Lakefront Park) and they get trained to do lots of things! These staff members are responsible for keeping people safe by enforcing policy, responding to emergencies, cleaning equipment, checking IDs, and much more.
- Fitness Assistants function very similarly to the Facility Attendants, except they work exclusively in our fitness workout spaces at the Leach Center and FMC.
- Outdoor Pursuits Trip Leaders get trained to lead groups of students on adventure trips into the wilderness throughout the Southeast. Our Trip Leaders also assist with engaging students in outdoor adventure activities at special events on and off campus.
All Campus Rec employees are responsible for the safety of participants and each other; we have a shared responsibility to take care of our programs, spaces, and participants. To make sure everyone stays safe, visitors have a great experience in our facilities, and everybody has fun participating in our programs – homework is not permitted on shift.
We have lots of entry-level positions within Campus Rec that do not require prior experience or valid certifications. We train you on the job, and give you all the tools you need to succeed in your new role!

Select positions require CPR certification for employment. However, new hires are permitted to obtain their certification within a designated time period after being hired. Campus Recreation offers low-cost American Red Cross CPR certification courses to employees at the Leach Center. The certification earned by the employee is transferable to jobs on and off campus.
Other than CPR certification, if you are applying to be a Personal Trainer or Group Fitness Instructor, you MUST be certified in your specialty by a nationally accredited association before applying.
Always be thinking ahead! For jobs that begin at the start of an academic term, job information sessions and application periods are often held in the middle of the previous semester. Some jobs are more seasonal and have application periods in other months. See our list of jobs for upcoming hiring periods for each job.
In general, Campus Rec typically searches for new employees during the following time frames:
- For spring jobs, look for job information sessions and application periods to occur in October
- For summer jobs, attend a job information session and apply in February
- For fall jobs, job information sessions and application periods are often in February and March. Most roles are hired before the end of the spring semester for a fall start.
- Intramural Sports offers more seasonal hiring periods based on the sports offered

Students planning to work at Florida State University should be prepared to present the required original, signed, and unexpired documents (e.g., a valid passport OR driver’s license AND a Social Security card) to the Campus Recreation Human Resource Office to complete the Form I-9. Additional forms are completed online as part of the hiring process.

Training periods vary for each position based on when new employees need to start. Many operational areas train new and returning staff just prior to the start of a semester. Training can take a few hours to a few days, depending on the skills required.
Some positions within Campus Recreation have initial training periods for new hires during the academic term. Examples include:
- Intramural Sports trains officials at Officials Clinics that occur after the semester has begun, often in the first few weeks of the semester. Officials Clinics are free and offer applicants the ability to learn key skills prior to consideration for hiring.
- Camp Flastacowo youth camp counselors receive a week-long training in late May prior to the start of the summer camp season in June.
There’s always something new to learn! Campus Rec is always looking for ways to improve and enhance the skills of our many student employees. Most positions require attendance at inservice trainings or regular meetings throughout a staff member’s employment in the department.
Volunteer Opportunities
